NOVGOROD TOUR

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Price: 250 USD. per person

Discover Novgorod, the former capital of old Rus, dating back to the IX century. This is quite a different insight into the country history and culture comparing to the history of ST-Petersburg which was founded in 1703. The tour includes a tour of the old Novgorod Kremlin, Yuriev Monastery and the Museum of the Wooden Architecture.

For those who had time to complete most of “must see” sight-seeing of ST-Petersburg, country travelling might be an exciting option to see some other parts of Russia.

Novgorod is one of the most ancient Russian towns in the North-West. It is located in between Moscow and ST-Petersburg on the banks of Volhov River and Ilmen Lake.

Veliky means Great in Russian. The name is self-explanatory; throughout many centuries Novgorod used to be a political centre of territories spreading from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mountains as well as the greatest international trade centre.

The heart of Novgorodf has always been the Kremlin (fortress), which is known locally by its ancient name "Detinets". Visitors will be shown around the Kremlin, the walls of which defended the ancient city of Novgorod and also served as the city centre. The current walls and towers of the Kremlin date back to the XV century.

The tour of the Novgorod Kremlin includes a visit to the Cathedral of ST Sophia (XI century), one of the most outstanding monuments of the ancient Russian architecture. The cathedral was modelled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The next stop of the tour is Yuriev Monastery with its cathedral of ST George which was consecrated in the XI century in the name of one of the most worshipped Russian saints.

The tour of Novgorod will finish in Vitoslavlitsy open-air museum of Slavic wooden architecture, moved here from villages in the local region.
