SERGIEV POSAD TOURSergiev Posad also known as Zagorsk, is a part of the famous Golden Ring route which starts and ends in Moscow passing through several towns of Ancient Rus. It is situated 72 km northeast of Moscow on the Yaroslavskoe highway. Sergiev Posad is a traditional orthodox centre, graced by the magnificent Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, with a blue and gold dome. Built in the fourteenth century, it was for many years, even under communism, the official seat of the Patriarch. There is a wonderful collection of icons on display. Sergiev Posad bears the name of Sergius of Radonezh, who founded the Trinity Monastery here in the middle of the XIV century. Sergius of Radonezh is often called “the greatest of Old Rus saints”. He had lived as a hermit for a long time. After he was joined by 12 more monks; he founded the monastery which he headed from 1355 till 1392. In 1412 the wooden cathedral was built to keep the relics of ST-Sergius who had died in 1392. Later on it was replaced by the stone cathedral of Trinity. The icon stand of the cathedral is painted by Andrey Rublev, the famous Russian icon artist. The monastery became the fortress in the time of Ivan the Terrible and at the beginning of XVII century it was besieged by Polish troops for many months. The Trinity Monastery, one of the oldest seats of the Orthodox Church, houses the vast collection of ancient Russian paintings and precious metal articles. It is the Mecca for Orthodox pilgrims who come to the white stone Trinity Cathedral to honour the relics of Sergey of Radonezh. Pick up Time: 9.00 a.m.
