THE GOLDEN RING TOUR

The Golden Ring refers to the ancient historical towns that cluster north and northeast of Moscow along what in the Middle Ages were the trade routes linking Russia’s two great centres of civilisation, Novgorod to the north and Kiev to the south.

When the most towns were founded in the XIth century, Rostov, Suzdal, Vladimir and Yaroslavl were principalities in their own right. By the time of Ivan the Great, Moscow had swallowed up every one of its ancient rivals to make the first Russian super state.

Visitors are constantly amazed at just how much of old Russia has been preserved here: there are vistas of quite stunning beauty and each of the settlements has its unique charm: kremlins with churches, preserved wooden houses and monasteries of a variety of periods.
