The Russian Museum is the first state museum of the Russian fine art in the country, founded in 1898 in the former Palace of Grand Duke Michael.
Today the Russian Museum is rivaled only by Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow as the world’s largest repository of Russian and Soviet art. Close to 400 000 items such as Russian icons, mosaic work, canvases of renown Russian artists, graphic works and sculptures, cover the period from the X century, the days of conversion of Russia into the Orthodox faith until modern times. The collection was assembled from country royal residences, the Hermitage, the Academy of Fine Arts and from private collections.
