Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is Russia’s greatest and most famous novelist. His both estates are wonderful windows on to the world of the late XIXth century and life as it was lived by a member of a privileged class.

Count Leo Tolstoy bought his Moscow house in 1882 and wintered here until 1901-his summers were spent at his birth place, Yasnaya Polyana, an estate about 200 km south from Moscow, the family owned since the late XVIIth century.

Two greatest works of Tolstoy-War and Peace and Anna Karenina were written in Yasnaya Polyana..
